In this section, our narratives focused on the drama that was to take place at the parole office in Concord, California. We explore the sexual dynamics in the Garridos household. For many years now till August 2009, Phillip Garrido had 2 wives. Nancy Garrido lived in the front house. In the back garden, the young 'wife' Alyssa had her tent. It was an alibi constructed by Phillip and Nancy Garrido as part of the 'Alyssa' identity. For here during the day, Alyssa played the part of 'older' sister to Angel and Starlit (Scarlett?). At night, she was Phillip Garrido's sex partner. For most nights, Phillip Garrido slept with her in the 'family' tent after the 2 girls are put to bed in the house with Nancy.

On the previous day, Tues, August 25, Phillip Garrido had travelled to University of California, Berkeley with the 2 girls, Angel and Starlit (Scarlett?). His appointment with the campus police officer Lisa Campbell was at 2 pm. Officer Ally Jacobs had joined in the meeting at the request of Officer Lisa Campbell. The previous day Mon, August 24, Phillip Garrido had turned up at the special event office of Officer Lisa Jacob requesting for permission to hold an event for his religious organisation called Gods Desire. Officer Lisa Campbell had told Phillip Garrido to come back the next day and she had made the appointment for the meeting at 2 pm the next day. After Phillip Garrido left her office with the 2 girls, Officer Lisa Campbell had spoken to Officer Ally Jacobs. Officer Ally Jacobs then carried out a check of Phillip Garrido. She found out that he was sex offender. Officer Ally Jacobs decided to sit in for the interview of Phillip Garrido with Officer Lisa Campbell. The appointment had been made for Tuesday, August 25 at 2 pm.

2 pm, Tues August 25 - Phillip Garrido arrived at the special event office of the University of California, Berkeley with the 2 girls, Angel and Starlit (Scarlett?). In the interview which lasted about 15 min, Officer Ally Jacobs had managed to engage the girls in a conversation while Officer Lisa Campbell talked with Phillip Garrido. Feeling a sense of unease, Officer Ally Jacobs had phoned Phillip Garridos parole agent Santos. He was not available to take the call and she had left a message on his voice messaging machine.

According to the officer, Garrido appeared to have a mental illness, and if he was required to take medication, it was apparent he was not. Because of his sex offender status, the officer was also concerned for the safety of the two young girls accompanying Garrido. The officer noted that the girls, who called Garrido daddy, and whom Garrido referred to as his daughters, acted as if Garridos strange behavior was normal. They had also made reference to an older sister aged 29.

After 3 pm, Tues August 25 - Phillip Garrido left his meeting at the UC Berkeley at probably about 2:15 pm but more likely later. Information from google map indicate that the drive home would have taken about 44 min.

Parole Officers Searched House
That same afternoon, the parole officer, Eddie Santos received the voice message left by Officer Ally Jacobs. He attempted to call her back and was advised by a records technician that she had left for the day. Together with another parole officer, La Grassa, they had gone to Phillip Garridos house at 1554 Walnut Avenue, Antioch. They left the office at about 1800 hours. They handcuffed Phillip Garrido and agent La Grassa stayed with Garrido outside the house while agent Santos searched the house but could not find the 2 girls. They found Nancy Garrido and her mother-in-law, Patricia Franzen(Garrido).

Back to the Parole Office
The officers then took Phillip Garrido back to the parole office. According to Google map, the drive would take about 23 minutes from 1554 Walnut Avenue to the parole office in Concord. During the trip, Garrido was adamant that he had done nothing wrong. He told them that the 2 girls were daughters of a relative and one of the parent had picked them up.

At the parole office, agent Santos reviewed Garrido's file. He then contacted G. Sims, Fairfield II U.S. (A) and reviewed Garrido's file with him. Although Garrido had a "no contact with minors" special condition of parole (SCOP), they decided there was no nexus to the SCOP because he had no prior or current convictions for PC288 noted in the field file. The 2 parole officers then drove him back to his Residence of Record (ROR) and instructed to report back the next day (Aug 26 2009) at 0800 hours to discuss this matter and his conditions. He was also instructed to bring all that was living with him.

Back to Walnut Avenue
Taking into consideration the driving time back and forth and the searching of the house and the questioning and reviewing at the parole office, we assumed that it took at least an hour and half.

By the time that Phillip Garrido was returned to his home, it would easily be 7:30 pm.

That evening dinner would have been disrupted. The trip to the University of California, Berkeley had turned into a disaster. It was a trip that he had to do to promote his new church, God's Desire. (Note: God's Desire was incorporated in California on April 24 2008). It was his new venture to sell God. Instead now, the parole officers were onto him. They were now aware of the 2 younger girls.

Since this was a Tuesday, we assumed Alyssa spent the day reading in her tent and gardening . Perhaps she checked the emails for Print for Less from the Personal Computer in the house. On that Tuesday, we believe that she was menstruating. On those day when she was having her period, Phillip Garrido kept his distance from her. Most likely, her period had started the previous Sunday, August 23, when she last slept with him in the air-conditioned shed which also had a TV, VCR, PC and a fish tank. In the photos taken on August 26, the beddings can be seen piled onto of the couch.

When the parole officers turned up at the house, the 2 girls were in the backyard garden with Alyssa or they could have just scooted to the backyard garden on a signal from Phillip or Nancy Garrido. They would have been well-trained on that. Alyssa would have been forewarned of the danger of discovery. Perhaps that evening they stayed in the backyard compound till Phillip Garrido had been returned to the house and the parole officers had left. Since Alyssa was menstruating, Phillip Garrido slept with Nancy in the house. This also contributed to the lack of communication and coordination between Phillip Garrido and Alyssa which set the stage for the discovery of Alyssa's real identity.

Commentary on the Backyard Compound

We have drawn out the whole compound paying in particular, the backyard compound where Alyssa was kept. To see the photos taken by Nick Stern and others, you can go to this page here where you can click on the arrows to see photos of the actual backyard compound and the inside of the tents and sheds.

The drawing is the outcome of analysing those photos and they are accurate to the state of the backyard compound as it was on Aug 26 2009.

None of the structures drawn here exist in the backyard compound anymore as the authorities have dismantled them. The latest google satellite photo shows an empty backyard devoid of any structures. A few trees have been left in place.

Alyssa's Tent
In the drawing shown on the right, Alyssa's tent was located at the top left corner of the backyard compound. This was the furthermost location from the road (Walnut Avenue) at the front of the house. How long has the tent been in that location?

Alyssa's tent was isolated from the rest of the backyard compound. A hedge fence isolated it from the family tent. The 'family tent' was where she lived out the latter years of her captivity as his 'wife'. In other words, she slept with him almost nightly in this tent until about the last month of her captivity. During the last month of her captivity, we believed she slept with Phillip Garrido in the air-conditioned shed due to the summer heat.

Although immediately since her recovery, she has stated to FBI that no sexual activities took place between Phillip Garrido and her after the birth of Starlit (Scarlett?) in November 1997, all evidence from the photos and accounts from the neighbours told a different story.

On the left of Alyssa's tent was the 8 ft fence separating the backyard compound from the neighbor and on the right was the dilapidated shed. And next to the dilapidated shed and by the back fence was the famous 'Welcome' sign hanging from the tree.

In front of the tent, there were 3 foldable chairs where we assumed that Alyssa spend time with Angel and Starlit (Scarlett?). Perhaps this was where they sat to enjoy the sunshine and also where 'big sister' Alyssa read to them and taught them the basics of reading and writing.

The books by the entrance to the tent were largely books on cats. Alyssa had limited education herself and she was in grade 5 when she was kidnapped. That was all she was capable of in terms of educating the girls.

The photo showed the tent as it was on Aug 26 2009. The tent looked tattered and many part of the tent had been patched with brown packaging tape. Part of the back of the tent fly sheeting had been ripped off by the wind. Overall the tent looked tattered. Perhaps it was set up after November 1997 which has been reported to be the birth month of Starlit (Scarlett?). It has been reported that the birth certificate issued for Starlit showed November 1997 to be her birth month. The name on the birth certificate was not reported but we believed that it is Scarlett. Angel was born in April 1994 and we believed her name has remained the same.

By the front of the tent were some plants growing in pots. Alyssa appeared to have taken up gardening and the plants in the pots were perhaps fairly recent plantings.

To the left of the tent and by the fence, there was a 2-person adult swing and a small round table in front of it. Stretched between her tent and the fence was those orange-colored mesh which was quite common around the garden.

This part of the backyard was her comfort zone and she had kept it tidy compare to the rest of the backyard compound which was more like a junk yard. The leaves had been swept into a pile perhaps for burning at a later date.

In the middle of the compound, there was a large dilapidated shed. What was stored in the front half of shed is not known as no photos were taken of it. The back half of it were full of junk including a pumpkin head. The back wall of this shed bordered another neighbor's yard. The back half of this shed had a dilapidated wooden wall only on one side facing one of the neighbours, Mike Rogers. The other side facing Alyssa tent did not have a wall and that was how Mike Rogers could observed the activities on this part of the backyard.

According to the neighbor Mike Rogers, over the last 3 years (prior to August 26 2009) period, he saw about 8-10 of these parties held in that backyard compound outside Alyssa's tent. There would be group of 8-10 men who were semi-dressed queuing by the dilapidated shed near the entrance to the tent. They would high-five each other as one exited and another entered the tent. Mike Rogers used his compound for storage and does not live there. The assumption is that these men were queuing outside Alyssa's tent for sex. The Welcome sign hanging from the tree by dilapidated shed near the back fence seemed to confirm his accounts of what he saw. The sign was welcoming customers to that backyard compound. In other words, we think prostitution did take place in that backyard compound.

Family Tent
Nancy was Phillip Garrido's legally married wife and Alyssa was forced to live in this tent as his other 'wife'. After her recovery, it was reported that their relationship was 'almost like a marriage' and Jaycee Dugard has strong feelings for Phillip Garrido. We believe that is so as she has conditioned herself to accept her fate and lived out her life as his wife. For this reason, we called this tent the family tent. The only bed in the whole backyard compound was found in this tent.

On the other side of Alyssa's tent was the family tent. This photo of the family tent was taken from location E. Alyssa's tent was hidden from view by this tent and also by a hedge between them. This tent appeared to be in better conditioned than Alyssa's tent perhaps because it was sheltered underneath some trees. Aerial photographs taken by news helicopter did not show the tent to be visible as it was hidden by the dense tree leaves. The older google satellite photo did show the tent. The trees looked barren with a few brown leaves so it is likely they were taken during the colder months.

In the foreground, there was a rectangular wooden structure with the orange mesh stretched across it. Perhaps there was a plan to grow some plants there. Just in front of it, a covered wire mesh can be seen. Perhaps, some tiny plants were growing and had to be protected by the wire mesh.

On the left of the photo was the 8-ft fence separating it from the next door neighbor. By the fence, a big padded garden bench was located. It was big enough and padded like a mattress to accommodate a copulating couple.

On the right, a partially hidden tree and next to it, a broken bar stool with a water bottle on it. On the right of the tent, some bushes had been planted and that would hid part of the tent when viewed further to the right.

Junk tent and Air-conditioned shed
The photo shows the family tent, a tent behind the air-conditioned shed.

This part of the garden was where Alyssa is thought to have been initially incarcerated during the earlier years of her captivity. In particular, the 'tool' shed, air-conditioned shed, the sound-proofed shed and the children's tent were probably the 4 main shelters in the earlier years of her captivity.

This tent looked to be in good condition. Perhaps it was a fairly recent addition. Like all the tents, it probably had wooden pallets for flooring. The blue tarpaulin made up the ground sheeting.

This tent was full of junk and broken female toys without clothes. Presumably the junk like cardboard boxes were kept for bonfire.

This tent was featured in initial news report. On the day this photo was taken (Aug 26 2009), this tent did not look like it was used for anything other than storage.

On the left of the photo and near the entrance to the tent, there appeared to be 2 bins lying on its side. In all the tents and sheds, there were no rubbish bins shown anywhere.

Children's Tent
Visible in the photo are the children's tent hidden under the blue tarp, air-conditioned shed, tool shed and the roof of the sound-proofed shed.

Although this photo was taken on Aug 26 2009, the children's tent was still hidden underneath the blue tarpaulin.

This tent was likely used by the young girls to store their belongings. There were plastic storage dresser and clothings. No beds or beddings could be seen although there was a couch inside and a mattress. Hence the conclusion that they would have been used during the day only. At night, the 2 younger girls slept elsewhere, most likely in the main house. Hence the comment by Phillip Garrido that the girls slept in his arms every night. Quite likely, he meant that he put them to bed every night. And after putting the 2 younger girls in bed in the main house, he retreated back to the backyard compound to spend the night with Alyssa.

They were living as man and 'wife' in that backyard compound. Hence the comment by Alyssa that their relationship was almost like a marriage. Not legally married but sleeping together like a married couple. That comment was to her family meaning her mother Terry Probyn.

In earlier interviews with FBI after her recovery, she has stated that no sexual activity between her and Phillip Garrido took place after the birth of her second child, Starlit (Scarlett?) in November 1997.

Air-Conditioned Shed
This photo of the air-conditioned shed was taken on Aug 26 2009. We think this was the shed that Alyssa and Phillip Garrido slept together during the last month of July-Aug 2009 before her recovery. In the OIG report, it was mentioned that for 32 days from Jul 23 - Aug 23, Phillip Garrido GPS signal was lost for 9 hours or more each night. We speculated that he spent those nights in that air-conditioned shed because of the hot summer nights.

From photos taken showing the inside of the shed, there was folded beddings lying on the couch. We can conclude that the shed was recently used. The question is who was/were using it? Was it Phillip Garrido on his own or was Alyssa with him every night? Or was it the 2 younger girls using the shed?

A likely scenario was that Phillip Garrido put the 2 younger girls to bed in the house every night. Later on, he would returned to the backyard compound and for those 32 nights, slept in the air-conditioned shed. That would explained the loss of the GPS received signal due to signal blockage by the surrounding walls of the air-conditioned shed. Did Alyssa join him in that shed? The more likely answer is yes. By then, after 18 years of captivity, she was living with him as his 'wife'. Hence her comment about their relationship as almost like a marriage.

Workshed/Classroom
This shed probably functioned as a classroom and also as a workshed. Seen in the photo were 2 microwave ovens and also a map hanging from the ceiling. Three chairs, benches and a desk could be seen in the photo. A fluorescent lamp could be seen above the far-end workbench. Another lamp could be seen at the left far-end of the shed. Presumably, the microwave ovens were used to heat up meals. There were no cooking facilities or even a fridge for storing perishables like milk. Some plastic containers rest above the microwave ovens. Also, a storage plastic container is present and rest above the microwave radios.

On the floor were files/folders in its usual disarray just like the rest of the garden.

On the left of the photo were wire mesh baskets hung down from the ceiling. Purpose unknown although those type of wire mesh baskets are popular for storing vegetables like onions, shallots, garlics, spring onions etcetera in the kitchen.

A blue towel was draped over the back of a swivel chair and has a table. A reddish water container sat on one end of the table.

The far-end of the shed led to a doorway. No information on what was at the back of this shed behind that doorway.

We can safely conclude that this shed functions more like an office and classroom in the backyard compound. It was certainly not used for sleeping as the flooring was not carpeting and there was also no bedding seen in the photo.

10 June 1991: Garrido allegedly kidnaps Jaycee Dugard from South Lake Tahoe during the George WH Bush presidency.

Jan 1992: Start of the Clinton presidency.

Apr 22 1992: Report of sighting of Jaycee Dugard at a Chevron gas station in Oakley, 2 miles from the Garrido's home. Caller said girl was staring at a missing poster of Jaycee Dugard. The girl left in a yellow van, possibly a Dodge.

March 18 1993: Federal government issues arrest warrant for Garrido for failing to report to federal probation officer as required and failing to participate in drug testing and aftercare counseling as directed. Garrido is incarcerated on April 1, 1993 and released on April 29, 1993.

July 16, 1993: Jaycee Dugard's Diary: "I got [a cat] for my birthday from Phil and Nancy they did something for me that no one else would do for me, they paid 200 dollars just so I could have my own kitten."

August 1994: Alyssa gave birth to Angel. If this was a normal pregnancy lasting 9 months, then she would have been impregnated in December 1993. It does sound like he did have a very Merry Christmas in December 1993.

1994 : Janice Gomes was having her nails done and reported encountering Phillip Garrido while he was out soliciting for business for Print for Less. He mentioned his wife had given birth.

1995 : Nancy Garrido resigned from her work as a nurse aide to look after the mother-in-law.

1996 :

February 10, 1997: Local law enforcement issues Garrido a traffic citation

Nov 1997 : Alyssa gave birth to Starlit (Scarlett?) in 1997.

Nov 6 1998 : Lisa Norrell aged 15 reported missing. Death by asphyxiation 8 days later on on old Highway 4 near Nav-Let's Garden Center, Pittsburg.

Dec 5 1998 : Jessica Frederick, 24 found (with multiple cut and stab wounds) on Harbor Street in Pittsburg which is not far from Old Highway 4 where Lisa was found).

Dec 15 1998 : Rachel Cruise, 32, death by asphyxiation/strangulation. Body was in a ditch near California Avenue which is near where Lisas body was found on Old Highway 4. Another source said she was found near an auto wrecking yard.

Jan 08 1999 : Valerie Dawn "China" Schultz, 27. Found dead with multiple stab wounds, strangulation in an industrial area in Pittsburg. Phillip Garrido was working in a recycling plant in Pittsburg then.

Mar 1999 : U.S. Parole Administration terminates Garridos federal parole supervision.

Mar 9, 1999 : U.S. Parole Administration terminates Garridos federal parole supervision. Nevada begins its parole supervision of Garrido.

Mar 18, 1999 : Local law enforcement issues Garrido a traffic citation.

Jun 8 1999 Aug 2009 : Garrido begins parole supervision with California Department of Corrections. Department performs parole supervision of Garrido on the behalf of Nevada.

July 5 2004 : Jaycee Dugard's Diary: "It feels like I'm sinking. I'm afraid I want control of my life ... this is supposed to be my life to do with what I like ... but once again he has taken it away. How many times is he allowed to take it away from me? I'm afraid he doesn't see how the things he says makes me a prisoner. Why don't I have control of my life! I feel I can't even be sure that my thoughts are my own." Was it about this period that she was forced into prostitution?

2005 : Google Earth released for public use.

2005 : Phillip Garrido took Delbert 'Jack" Medeiros and the whole 'family' consisting of Nancy, Alyssa, Angel and Starlit (Scarlett) to San Francisco for a vacation. Medeiros paid $1000 for that trip.

Oct 11, 2005: Local law enforcement performs traffic stop on Garrido.

Nov 30 2006 : Erika Pratt lodged a report that her neighbour Phillip Garrido is psychotic and has a sexual addiction.

2007 : Google mapping car drove past 1554 Walnut Avenue and capture a van coming out of Phillip Garrido's drive and it followed it for some distance.

May 15 2007 : Phillip Garrido sets up blog, Voices Revealed, in which he says he can hear God and angels and will save the world.

2007 : From late 2007 to March 2008, Phillip Garrido allegedly swindle Dilbert "Jack" Medieros of $18,000.

Aug 25, 2009: UC Berkeley police call Garridos parole agent to report concerns regarding minors
accompanying Garrido on campus. The parole agent goes to Garridos residence and brings him to parole office for questioning. The parole agent returns Garrido to his residence and instructs him to report to the parole office the next day.

Aug 26 2009 : Garrido reports to the parole office with his wife, a female adult, and two female juveniles. The parole agent separates the females from Garrido and interviews them, but is unable to obtain clear identification. The parole agent then interviews Garrido and receives conflicting information. The parole agent contacts Concord Police who interview Garrido and determines Garrido is the father of the juveniles. The parole agent again interviews Garrido who confesses that he kidnapped and raped the female adult. Garrido is arrested.

The Garrido Household

Our narratives in this section focussed on the tanking US economy in 2008 through 2009 and its impact on Print for Less. As far as we know, Print for Less was a sole proprietor business owned solely by Phillip Garrido. Its main business appeared to be largely business cards and flyers.

With the US economy in trouble and growing unemployment and collapse of many local businesses, Print for Less was also in trouble. With local businesses collapsing, there were less demand for business cards. There were less businesses that needed them and for Garrido's customers, there were less customers that they needed give.

Phillip Garridos decided to make his move. He was going to sell God. Nancy was trying to sell Phillip Garrido's music on the Internet. Alyssa had the idea that she could be a model. In this section, our narratives focused on the effect of years of brainwashing/conversion that must have taken place in order to Alyssa to be in her current mental state.

In the 1977 movie Telefon starring Charles Bronson and Lee Remick, it touches on sleeper agents from the USSR that are programmed to carry out a pre-programmed function when they hear a certain auditory cue spoken to them. The trigger for them to move into a zombie state was from a poem written by Robert Frost. Part of the poem is reproduced below.

It is an fascinating idea that a human being can be controlled to carry out a pre-programmed action on hearing a certain phrase. Will Jaycee Dugard be so well conditioned over her 18 years that she will still respond to her former captors' voices? Will she will be able to break loose of her captors' psychological hold over her? Those voices in her head that she had been conditioned to respond to over the last 18 years.

A Heart Warming Story
From his jail cell, Phillip Garrido's has made claims that his life "has been straightened out" and implored people to wait until they hear the whole story of what happened over the past 18 years.

"What's kept me busy the last several years is I've completely turned my life around," Garrido told KCRA 3 (Sacramento TV station on channel 3) "And you're going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim -- you wait. If you take this a step at a time, you're going to fall over backwards and in the end, you're going to find the most powerful heart-warming story."

It was a statement full of suggestions and for the public, it sounded self-serving. But that statement could well be aimed at the victim, Jaycee Dugard. That she should tell her interrogators about the wonderful things that happened between her and him, Phillip Garrido. Those life changing moments that he had conditioned her to believe in that backyard garden. How? Let us discuss about brainwashing or conversion as it is also known.

Brainwashing (Conversion)
The study of brainwashing has to begin with a study of Christian revivalism in eighteenth century America. Apparently, Jonathan Edwards accidentally discovered the techniques during a religious crusade in 1735 in Northampton, Massachusetts. By inducing guilt and acute apprehension and by increasing the tension, the "sinners" attending his revival meetings would break down and completely submit. Technically, what Edwards was doing was creating conditions that wipe the brain slate clean so that the mind accepts new programming or suggestions.

Nine Conversion Techniques
The brainwashing of Jaycee works by creating an appropriate state of suggestibility in her. In this case, the Garridos had all the time in the world to achieve it. We identified 9 primary techniques used to generate her conversion.

1. Jaycee was kept in the sound-proofed shed for a year and a half. She was cut-off from the outside world with no other human interaction other than by her captors themselves. In order to cause her maximum discomfort, she would have been denied basic physical needs like access to the bathroom, food and water.

2. Her captors would have given her lengthy talk about the importance of "keeping agreements" in life. She would have been told that if she did not keep her agreements, she would be punished severely. And she would have vowed to herself and her captors that she would keep her agreements. Examples of such an agreement would be that she was never to reveal her real identity to anyone. She was never to divulge information on her captors and her relationship with them to anyone.

3. She would also be denied proper meals such that hunger induced tension. The idea was to alter her internal chemistry, which generated anxiety and with the intention to cause malfunction of her nervous system. This helped with accelerating her brainwashing /conversion.

4. And to round off her brainwashing, her agreements will be used to ensure that at some stage in her life, she will be required to go out to find new participants. She will be intimidated into agreeing to do so and in her situation, her captors were always around to enforce these agreements.

5. She would have been subjected to repetitive sessions. In her case, it was at least a year and half before she was let out of the sound-proofed shed. She was in that backyard compound for 18 years. From the bookshelf in her tent, we know that he spent significant amount of time with her in that tent. With her kind of repetitive conditioning, long term control of her was assured.

6. She was repetitively raped in that sound-proof shed. The prolonged rapes caused a physical and mental fatigue. The rapes degraded her psychological and physical well-being. These rapes would have been blamed on her for some infringements. She had to do better not to be raped and she was conditioned to blame herself for the rapes. She would have developed a guilt complex.

7. She would have been verbally and physically abuse in that sound-proofed shed and over the years. This would increase the tension. She would be picked on and shouted at or humiliated. The whole idea was to put her on the spot. She would have been pumped for information about herself, immediate family members, her school friends and teachers and anything that she knew then. That information would then be manipulated and presented in the most negative manner back to her. An example could be that her family had abandoned her or threats of violence against her family members, school friends and teachers.

She had to relate all her innermost secrets and forced to take part in activities that emphasized removing her mask. This could be the removal of her clothes or denial of sanitary pads during her menstrual period or even sex toys inserted into her private parts. So you can imagine the fear and tension that she was put under the spot. She would literally go into an alpha state and open to suggestions. And another loop of the downward spiral into conversion was successfully effected.

8. She would have been introduced to religious ideology. The introduction of jargon--new terms that have meaning only to her and her captors. Vicious language could be frequently used, purposely, to make her uncomfortable.

9. And to round it off, there would be no humor in the communications. Not until she had submitted to the will of her captors. Then, merry-making and humor, highly desirable as symbols of the new joy she had supposedly "found."

The mental conditioning had been constant over the last 18 years. She was conditioned to respond to his suggestions and commands. His voice resonated inside her head.

And from his prison cell, he had suggested that the victim had a powerful heart-warming story to tell the world. That was the first time she had heard his voice played over the mass media.

Recovery - Long Term Impact
Since her recovery, Jaycee Dugard has undergone deprogramming, psychological and psychiatric counselling. Phillip Garrido owned her body and mind for 18 years. From his prison cell, he had written to KCRA-3 that Jaycee Dugard was denied her constitutional right during the questioning at the parole office as she had requested for a lawyer. This came from a man that was used to owning her body and mind that he did not recognise her rights to be with her natural family. Obviously for him, the law of the jungle applied with the kidnapping and yet he demanded that his captive has constitutional rights to deny her identity. Such was his belief in his mental hold over her. Could he be proven right in the long term? Will history repeat itself and will Jaycee Dugard seek to free Phillip Garrido just like when Nancy Bocanegra worked to free him 25 years ago? Will Jaycee Dugard continue to respond to his commands in the long term?

Update Feb 11 2010 - Court submission by the prosecutor revealed that the following.

page 7, (16) - On or about Jan 28 2010, counsel for Phillip Garrido sent a letter to Ms Doe (Jaycee Dugard) which stated, "Mr. Garrido has asked me to convey to you that he does not harbor any ill will toward [Ms Doe} or the children and loves them very much." Ms. Doe immediately put the reference to "no ill will" in context that "I am not following the plan." Ms. Doe explained that "the plan" dictated should Mr. Garrido ever be arrested, they were to "keep in communication through lawyers." Ms Doe further indicated that her belief that the referral by her former captor and rapist to not harbor ill will was "another way of manipulating" her.

What the Neighbours Heard and Saw and Others Who Interacted with him

Neighbour Mike Rogers
Mr Rogers says 'perverts' in the area were regularly invited over by Garrido for sex, beer and drug parties and that the Garrido home was, in effect, being used as a brothel.

He watched groups of men arriving at the house on hot summer nights. They carried crates of beer. Mainly of Mexican appearance, they lit bonfires, played music and shouted and laughed late into the night.

They also took it in turns to enter a tent erected amid the junk in Garrido's backyard. 'I saw them entering the tent one by one,' he says. 'I saw them bobbing up and down and I thought, "My God, there is something sexual going on in there".'

Mike Rogers, 49, told the newspaper that he once peered through the garden fence during an 'excessively loud' party next door. 'These guys were unsavoury looking men,' he says.

'What I saw was not normal,' he said. 'Eight to 10 men, mostly Mexican, would gather in a line in his garden drinking beer, yelling and screaming and swearing.

'They normally had a bonfire and I saw them entering the tent one by one. On a number of occasions I saw them bobbing up and down through the window and I thought, 'My God, there is something sexual going on in there'.

'They were drinking beer and smashing the bottles on the ground. I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something. It happened quite often. They were different men each time.'

The men gave each other 'high-fives' when they emerged from the tent.

'I just hope that sicko wasn't pimping out Jaycee or those children. The thought makes me sick.'

But, despite being disturbed by what he had seen, Mr Rogers said he didn't think he had enough evidence to call police.

'I'd told my brother about the parties and he agreed that unless they got really out of control I should keep out of it,' he said.

Christine Murphy who was the first wife of Phillip Garrido described him as a monster, and that he continually hit her. Phillip Garrido was an aspiring musician with no valid income. Murphy recounts that he continually smoked marijuana and dropped LSD. He had sexual perversions and wanted his wife to engage in group sex, which she refused. It wasnt until Phillip Garrido was arrested for the rape of Katherine Gallaway that Christine Murphy found a way to escape.

Neighbour Dana Crandell
Neighbor Dana Crandell, 35, used to play near the yard as a kid and now works at the local Savemart, where Garrido would shop "with two young girls."

"Years ago, my brother heard someone in the back yard having sex. At the time we just thought it was him and his girlfriend. They had a hot tub back there. "There were wooden shutters on the house that he would always put up, and he always locked his gate."

Until three years ago, Garrido, 58, acted as caretaker of the house next door to his property, which also has a number of sheds and outbuildings which have now been cordoned off by police.

Damon Robinson, who now lives in the house, said all the locks were turned around so people could be locked in, rather than locked out.

'It took me a while to realise, but Garrido had access to all of these buildings. At first I didn't even realise they were part of my land because there are wire fences splitting up the yard.

'When I moved over in one of the sheds there was a music player, a couch, a mattress and a VCR. He really wanted the VCR back when I found it.

'There had been times when I could hear music coming from there at night. Maybe he was taking the girl over there for a change of scenery or something a little nicer than he had in his yard, I don't know.'

Janice Gomes
Janice Gomes remembers the day she met Garrido. She was in a beauty salon getting her nails done when he came in soliciting business. It was 1994, she recalled, and "he told me his wife just had a baby."

Gomes and her husband used Garrido for their home-cleaning businesses, and he also printed brochures and tickets for Gomes' National Community Empowerment Program, a nonprofit public safety group.

Nine years ago, after 7-year-old Xiana Fairchild was abducted from the nearby city of Vallejo, the group decided to update its tip sheet for parents. Gomes recalled that Garrido made suggestions.

"He said, 'You might want to put that parents should never let their children go to the bus stop alone,' " Gomes recounted. " 'Children are no match for an adult.' "

Like many print shop customers, Gomes said Garrido's religiosity began to deepen. Last October, he came to their offices, especially excited, waving a document.

"When the FBI reads this and this comes out," he told her, "this is going to be a beautiful story. It's going to be worldwide. It tells how God healed me from pornography and prostitutes."

He handed Gomes the papers. She threw them away.

"He's so happy right now," Gomes speculated. "This is the worldwide thing he's talking about."

Erika Pratt, 25, who stayed next door two years ago, said she was continuously "freaked out" by Garrido's behavior and that when she popped her head over the fence she saw his secret compound. There were tents, sheds and pit bulls, she said, and water hoses leading from her house next door.

"He had little girls and women living in that backyard, and they all looked kind of the same," Pratt said. "They never talked, and they kept to themselves."

Erica Pratt was the woman that called the police in 2006 to report Phillip Garrido as a psychotic and a sex addict. Obviously, she saw some sexual activities happening in that backyard from her side of the fence. Also, Phillip Garrido took water from her side of the property to run the shower and the swimming pool.

A blank stare
Haydee Perry, 35, who lives next door, said that when Phillip Garrido helped her jump-start her car a month ago, he had a young girl clinging to him in a manner that struck her as strange.

"She stayed close to him at all times," Perry said. "It wasn't normal behavior. She had a blank stare on her face. Now it seems like a cry out for help."

A Web site containing statements from Garrido and others called "Voices Revealed" talks about a turnaround that allowed him "to open doors that will honor the creator and his eternal purpose for mankind."

The site also indicates that he gave a demonstration in Pittsburg last month with a homemade box to prove "the creator has given me the ability to speak in the tongue of angels in order to provide a wake-up call that will in time include the salvation of the entire world."

Mary Thomas, accountant at J&M auto dismantlers in Pittsburg, near where Garrido set up his revival tent, said he "was always very professional and spoke the word of God whenever he talked."

Garrido had a printing business, making business cards for J&M and others in the area. Tiffany Tran, who runs Furniture Gallery in Brentwood, said she had seen and done business with "Phil the printer" for six years, as recently as last week.

A little different
She recalled Garrido as being "a little different" and said he constantly talked about religion and showed her a device through which he claimed he could control sound with his mind.

"Some people have a story behind their smile, some don't - he did," Tran said. "He was happy-go-lucky, but you knew there was a story behind it."

Pratt said people came and went from the property, but the core group consisted of two girls about 4 years old, one girl about 11, another girl about 15 and a young woman about 25. They were all blond, she said.

Pratt said she had called Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies to investigate, but that officers "told me they couldn't go inside because they didn't have a warrant. So they just told him they'd keep an eye on him."

Neighbor Dana Crandell, 35, used to play near the yard as a kid and now works at the local Savemart, where Garrido would shop "with two young girls."

"He came into the supermarket where I work and I met the little girls," she said. "I said to him, 'I didn't know you had daughters.' He said, 'Oh, yeah, these are my girls.' He always talked about God. He always talked about his recordings.

"I saw the girls three different times. They were hanging on his arms, asking 'Can we get this, can we buy this?' He just got milk and the bare necessities and always paid with cash.

"I played back there as a little kid. He always peeked over the fence. He was real neighborly, but he never let anyone come onto his property. I never knew that existed back there.

"Years ago, my brother heard someone in the back yard having sex. At the time we just thought it was him and his girlfriend. They had a hot tub back there.

"There were wooden shutters on the house that he would always put up, and he always locked his gate."

Another neighbor, Dante Consetti, has lived in the area for decades and often worked outdoors.

"I worked in the yard for years and I didn't hear a thing," he said.

Residents said they frequently saw Garrido but tended to avoid him and his religious rants and his penchant for singing gospel songs.

"He came around to my place and he wanted to sing," said Sam Kovisto.

"It was always gospel singing and religious stuff. I told him to get lost and not come on my property."

Kovisto said he saw the little girls a few times and "knew he was on the sex offenders registry."

"Since I first saw that guy, I knew there was something not right about him," he said. "He thought he was God. He was crazy."

Another neighbor, Erika Pratt, 25, reported seeing pit bulls on the property.

Some of the neighbors knew he was a registered sex offender. But they said they didn't know he'd been convicted of rape and kidnapping in 1976.

Many of the homes surrounding Garrido's are rentals.

Garrido moved into the house -- which had been owned by his mother Patricia's now-deceased husband, Herschel Franzen -- after he got out of prison.

He and his wife and alleged co-conspirator, Nancy, lived in the main home with Patricia, who is said to be suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Even Garrido's family had their suspicions -- but apparently never asked too many questions.

Garrido's brother, Ron, who lives in nearby Brentwood, yesterday recalled how Phillip visited an aunt in 2007, with two little girls in tow.

Phil told the relative that he was watching the kids for a neighbor, but she didn't buy it, Ron said.

"My aunt told me, 'I swear that oldest girl is his daughter. She's got his eyes.' "

Deepal Karunaratne, a Sri Lankan-born estate agent who employed Garrido to print his flyers and business cards, said he believed "Phil and Nancy" when they introduced him to their blonde blue-eyed "daughter", Jaycee.

"Only he said she was called Allissa, and one of her daughters was called Scarlett," he told The Sunday Times last week.

"Jaycee was part of the family business, running the printing press in the back yard. I would see her in work overalls, covered with ink, negotiated with her when she could not complete my order. She was always polite and professional. Or wearing jeans and a blouse standing outside the house with Nancy, who did all the bookkeeping."

He added that he and Jaycee exchanged regular phone calls and e-mails.

"He [Garrido] would not let me see the press or the backyard: he said it was a trade secret. I was aware there were two little girls there, although I did not know they were living in tents. They went out to movies and to eat, nothing exceptional or strange," he said.

His testimony is backed up by Ben Daughdrill, who last year met a woman who was introduced as Allissa when he went to Garridos house to pick up some business cards. "She was the design person; she did the art work; she was the genius," said Daughdrill, who also communicated by phone and e-mail with Jaycee.

Both Karunaratne and Daughdrill are now haunted by what was uncovered last week. For Karunaratne, two recollections are particularly telling and troubling.

"Over the last three years he [Garrido] grew more intense about his religion. He said that God was speaking to him through this machine, and asked me to listen through headphones and sign a form saying Id heard the voices too.

"I heard nothing but did it, to be polite. But he seemed to grow more crazy every time I saw him. He said he was being attacked by angels. He was melting down.

The second cold finger running down the estate agents spine is Garridos account of a day recently when he took Jaycee and the girls on a "mission" to a nearby town called Pittsburg.

"He told me he had set up a stall to hand out his tracts, and all the family was helping him. His car broke down on the way home, and he phoned me up for a lift back. I told him to take the bus."

Maria Christenson -
Garrido did printing work for a Pittsburg recycling center for more than a decade, and he did it well.

Some of the receipts and envelopes came with lovely children's designs, said Maria Christenson, owner of Christenson Recycling Center. His daughter did them, Garrido proudly told her.

"There was nothing weird with him at the beginning. But I noticed a year ago he just went off the deep end," she said.

That's when Phillip and Nancy Garrido - charged Friday in the 1991 abduction and sexual assault of Jaycee Dugard - came into her office, shut the door and asked for a $2,000 advance. They needed a new bathroom and had plans to start a backyard church, they told her.

"He started preaching and doing all this stuff. He was telling me about his voices. And then he said, "You know I've been to prison, and I don't masturbate anymore." Out of the blue," she said. "Then he started crying, and she was crying. I was looking at them - what is this about? I got freaked out."

Just 19 when they married, Christine worked at a Reno casino to pay the bills because Garrido, an aspiring musician, had no real income. She says he took LSD or smoked marijuana every day, and he became violent when she refused to go along with his sexual fantasies.

"What did he ask you to do?" McInerney asks.
"Multiple partners is what he wanted, I wouldnt go for that," says Christine.

When Garrido saw another man flirt with his wife, Christine says he took out a safety pin and dug it into her face. The scar is still visible. And when she ran away, Garrido carried out what was probably his first kidnapping.

"He pulled up in front me and we got in an argument and he grabbed me and threw me in the car," she says of the incident.

Four years into the marriage, Garrido was convicted of kidnapping and raping a woman and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

"Honestly [I was] relieved, it was my exit out," Christine says of Garrido's sentence.

Christine later remarried and had four children. She had no idea that her ex-husband had been released from jail until she heard the news about the discovery of Jaycee Lee Dugard.

"It made me sick to my stomach," she says of Dugard's ordeal.

Christine says she has total sympathy for what Jaycee has gone through these last 18 years.

"What do you want to say to Phillip Garrido right now?"

Books Inside Alyssa's Tent
What did Alyssa read during her years of captivity? The books that people choose to read say a lot about them. Women who eat up romance novels are permanent believers in love, whether or not they have it in their own life.

Most people read to escape their world - and a look at many books Alyssa read during her 18 years in Philip Garrido's squalid compound shows that she's no different.

But there's one novel that doesn't provide an escape, and a photograph shows it on top of a dilapidated nightstand in the compound: Shadowbridge by Gregory Frost, a fantasy chronicle published last year. It's about a teenage girl traveling through an imaginary kingdom, and a "brothel" where customers go to drain the vitality of young children until the kids have no soul left. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see the parallels with Alyssa's own horrifying situation.

Photos taken inside her tent showed that Alyssa was an avid reader. Jaycee's aunt, Tina Dugard, said that Jaycee told the family during their reunion that she loved to read. "She likes mysteries," Tina Dugard told the Orange County Register - an ironic preference, given that Jaycee's own disappearance was one of the most persistent mysteries of recent years.

From the bookshelves, another story can be told. Due to the numerous books by Dean Koontz, Isaac Asimov, Greg Bear, we can only interpret that Phillip Garrido spent a significant amount time in this tent. Those books are his books not hers. It was in this tent that he guided her intellectural curiosity. He conditioned her mind to believe that there was a love story between them.

In Riley in the Morning, Alyssa transported herself into the role of Brin Cassidy, the sensuous and strong-willed beauty and wife of Jon Riley. In the A Whole New Light Alyssa is Cynthia a widow who took on a lover Worth Lansing. The two close friends took a short vacation together. Worth always knew what to say and Alyssa could always open up to him. They were each other's rock and Worth would always be there for his best friend's widow.

Worth was a lady's man; he had many women around but never found one that fit his lifestyle. Alyssa teased Worth about his wild ways and Worth let Alyssa know that her ways weren't as perfect. If they were, she would be happy. The beauty of their friendship allowed them to discuss everything, just as best friends would. All of that would change in Acapulco as they entered their suite. "...Worth and Alyssa stood like statues in the middle of the room, staring down at the bed-the one king-size bed."

In Do With Me What You Will, Alyssa fills the role of Elena. It is a love story that concentrates upon the tension between two American 'pathways' : the way of tradition, or Law; and the way of spontaneous emotion-in this case, Love. In the synthesis of these two apparently contradictory forces lies the inevitable transformation of our culture.

"Romantic love is one of our Western religions and must be respected as such; it must be acknowledged as the violent, unstoppable, rather beautiful force it is. But the West is also a culture of Law : American society will never be transformed by stray acts of violence in the streets-it will be transformed only through the courts. And they, in turn, will not be transformed until the men who run them are changed, individual by individual. Ours is still a time of romantic love; the time of a more communal, transcendental love is not yet come. DO WITH ME WHAT YOU WILL suggests such a transformation.

"If what is available to an individual is romantic love, then it must be-it will be-this kind of love that liberates." In the "freeing" from the enchantment of her "self," Elena lives a drama in which, by a continual process, she is raised to a higher aspect of her own being through involvement with a man-a drama of marriage and adultery that constructs an hour-by-hour, thought-by-thought experience both shattering and redemptive."

Another critic Rose Marie Burwell states: "Certain that the law will not save her, that the very concepts of innocence and guilt depend on the human propensities of those who define and dispense justice, Elena recognizes the truth that "Necessity Makes Law." Assuming moral self-responsibility in the final chapter, Elena Howe enters an unspoken plea of nolo contendre, the vulgate of which is the title of the novel, Do With Me What You Will ( 1973 ). The plea, in English common law and in most states, requires the court to proceed on an assumption of the defendant's innocence--even though he refuses to defend himself. Here the reader is the court and Elena Howe is both Everyman and many women. The dilemma she has been chosen to exemplify, the struggle to create and retain a tenable sense of self, is a universal one in which every individual who achieves emotional and moral maturity participates. For Elena a belated and violent sexual awakening sounds a warning signal, forcing upon her the realization that she must synthesize her personality or accede to her own disintegration. Elena's resistance and the Jungian stages of her individuation provide the narrative structure of novel. "
